To See a World in a Grain of Sand
(assemblage with altered book)
Inspired by William Blake's "Augaries of Innocence"
(1803).
"To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour"
Illustration used: Girl Reading, Renoir, 1876
Book used: Life in Earnest. Highlighted
text: "If you love the Lord Jesus, you have every thing."
Other materials: computer hard drive, optical
lens, antique spectacles, rusted metal something-or-other, chain, sandalwood
essential oil
The first line of Blake's poem is applied to the
insides of the spectacle lenses. While the rusted metal do-hickey
holding the specs continues to corrode away, the silicon-based products
in this piece will probably outlast us all! In fact, the small glass
blob is highlighting the word "grace"... a gift with truly eternal
significance.
